Antibiotic Use: Antibiotics for diverticulitis are appropriate if they are not too broad spectrum. For a confirmed strep infection, a narrow spectrum gram positive antibiotic is also appropriate. We get into trouble when we treat a simple infection with a broad spectrum antibiotic.

Bacterial Resistance: Any time you take antibiotics you increase your chances of later having a bacteria that is resistant to those antibiotics. That is why doctors should be judicious about choosing when to prescribe antibiotics. To help decrease resistance, it is important to take the full course of treatment prescribed by your doctor.
