I went to the eye doctor for the first time - the optic nerve size is slightly different between my eyes. why would this happen/should i be concerned?

No: your ophthalmologist would have told you otherwise if there is a need to do something different, I believe he meant the optic disc rather, not the optic nerve. Just follow up routinely, with the ophthalmologist for fundus (back of the eyes) exam, and ocular pressure measurements, best wishes
