How long does it take for facial swelling to go down after a bone graft surgery?

Facial swelling: The swelling that is normally expected is usually proportional to the surgery involved.   swelling around the mouth, cheeks, eyes, and sides of the face is not uncommon.   this is the body's normal reaction to surgery and eventual repair.   the swelling will not become apparent until the day following surgery and will not reach its maximum until 2-3 days post-operatively.   use frozen pea packs.

4-5 days: Maximum swelling after any surgical procedures occur on day #3. Usually by 4-5 days most of the swelling has resolved. However, it really depends on the individual patient, the size of the bone graft, if multiple procedures were performed in addition to the bone graft, the patient's health and the type of post surgical care that was provided.

1-2 weeks: Swelling often is controlled by giving corticosteroid within half an hour of the procedure and should accompany antibiotic. If swelling occur, it usually causes by chemotaxis of all the inflammatory mediators (7 days). If causes by infection, it happened usually on day 3 and should be treated with antibiotics. All swelling should reduce greatly in 2 weeks unless there is persistent infection.
