Hand foot and mouth: http://www.cdc.gov/Features/HandFootMouthDisease/index.html http://www.ct.gov/dph/cwp/view.asp?a=3136&q=388270 It is most contagious when symptomatic, the first week but can be contagious during incubation (just before the onset fo symptoms) and even for a time when the illness appears resolved,as it is shed in the stool .

No: For hand foot and mouth disease the most contagious period is considered to be from the onset of the mouth ulcers until the fever is gone. However patients can continue to excrete virus in their stool for up to one month, potentially spreading the virus. *That is why it is good advice for ALL people to carefully wash their hands after using the bathroom AND to wash their hands before eating.
