A member asked:

I found my 2 yo putting infrared non laser thermometer in his eyes. can this cause eye damage? even though there isn't a laser, is there one inside?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unfocused: Infrared light at low power and brief interval is too far away from the retina to cause permanent damage to the photoreceptors. Typically these type of thermometers do not use excited light emissions or laser technology. We use infrared lasers in the 810nm band to treat the retina and that is a different type of technology.
