Maybe: To perform proper 'valsalva' maneuver, you pinch and blow out a bit with mouth closed to 'pop' ears. Swallowing may not be enough. You may have a eustachian tube problem and should see your ENT about this.

A/W Dr. Rosenthal: Many people require more than the technique you described to get a good valsalva. If you don't get ear drum movement/ clearing ears with inhaling and then bearing down with pinched nose then consider seeing an ENT doctor. Bottom line is that if you aren't capable of clearing your ears during scuba diving, you may end up with an ear squeeze. Take care.

Easy fix: What you're doing is called a modified Valsalva maneuver. It is performed to force the Eustachian tude (a tube connecting the middle ear to our throat) to open so pressure in your ear can equalize. Eustachian tude dysfunction is commonly caused by mucous (from allergies or mild infections) not allowing it to open. Next time you fly or dive try some pre-med with Afrin (oxymetazoline) spray.
