DSM childhood group: In the dsm (diagnostic statistical manual) catalogue of disorders, they are both part of a group called pervasive developmental disorders. It includes autism, Asperger syndrome, pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (pdd-nos). This is separate from obtaining financial support for having a disability - it would be likely, but not guaranteed that benefits could be obtained.

It is a 'disorder'.: The diagnostic and statistic manual - 5 was recently published changing the way we classify asperger's and autism. The diagnoses now fall under the heading of 'autism spectrum disorder'. By definition the symptoms related to an autism spectrum disorder cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.
