Possibly.: If you are overweight and your cholesterol is mildly abnormal, weight reduction and exercise is likely to be effective. Some genetically-determined lipid abnormalities will not completely normalize with diet and exercise alone; they require the addition of specific medications. A vegetarian diet would be best; next best would be the mediterranean diet. See your doctor.
