Why do you take benadryl (diphenhydramine) for rashes when it doesn't say helps rashes?

Benadryl (diphenhydramine): It helps rashes that are caused by allergy or it also helps with itching. Medicines are often used for problems beyond what the company advertises or what the fda has approved them for. Many times experiences of patients and doctors will lead to new uses of medicines.

NO NO NO: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is a sleeping pill so it should never be used unless you want a traquilizer. Do not drive for 6 hours after use. As an antihistamine it is used for hives. Most itch is not due to histamine and does not respond. There are several meds which are safer ; much more effective.. It is of no benefit for eczema or poison ivy unless you want to be sedated.
