Graves disease: Actually hyperthyroidism does not cause exophthalomos. Graves disease is an autoimmune disease that causes hyperthyroidism, and in some people causes exophthalomos. The eye disease can occur years after the thyroid problem is resolved. There is inflammation in and behind the eyes from the autoimmune process.
