A few: Most often, the entire gland can overproduce thyroid hormone. This is called graves' disease. Less commonly, a single nodule is responsible for the excess hormone secretion. This is a "hot" nodule. Thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid) can also cause hyperthyroidism.
