What does it mean when a child rubs eyes and they are red?

Red eyes: Typically, red eyes are seen in infectious conjunctivitis (bacterial or viral), and allergic conjunctivitis. A child who rubs red eyes may be doing so because they are itchy, which would indicate allergy. Other clues would be discharge (clear or colored). Differentiating between the two is important as the treatment is different.
