It's hard, but quit.: Lung function naturally declines as you age. This is accelerated with copd. Quitting smoking will slow this decline and even more importantly lower your risk for heart attack and stroke. Also, get a yearly flu shot and you should have a pneumonia shot as well if you haven't had one. Talk to your doctor about smoking cessation options/strategies. Best of luck!

Avoid diseases: I answered part of the question earlier. Now to stay healthy, keep good nutrition. Be sure you are protected with the flu shot and pneumonia shot, and avoid exacerbating factors or environmental factors. Keep your medicines to avoid inflammation and airway twitchiness and yes, exercise as you can to improve your sense of dyspnea.
