An extreme measure.: Undertaken only for cases of severely preterm fetal anemia, intrauterine transfusion can help carry the affected fetuses to potential viability. Each procedure carries a risk of >5% of fetal loss and should only be performed at specialized centers that perform such delicate tasks on a regular basis.

Fetal anemia: Babies with severe anemia can be given intrauterine transfusions. The anemia that i typically see involved is rh (or other blood type) incompatibility. The procedure is performed by experienced specialists, typically perinatologists. In good hands, this procedure can save the life of an unborn child.
