Very safe: Blood donors are screened for diseases and medications. Blood products are screened for infectios agents, bacteria, viruses and parasites. Blood banks store blood for a limited period of time only.

Has risks: Transfusion not as safe as once thought. Clearly shown to have some adverse consequences-such as immunosuppression. However, if you are actively bleeding or very symptomatic from low blood count (low BP, high heart rate) then risks are outweighed by benefit.
