Diverticulosis: A diverticulum is a pouch-like structure that can form in the muscular wall of the colon, particularly at points where blood vessels enter. Diverticulosis affects men and women equally. The risk of diverticular disease increases with age. It occurs throughout the world but is seen more commonly in developed countries. They can get infected and also bleed. When infected its called diverticulitis.

Not very significant: Diverticulosis are very common especially among older patients. People with diverticulosis are at a very small risk of diverticulitis but significant number of people with diverticulosis never get diverticulitis which is inflammation and infection of diverticulum. The current recommendation is to increase fiber in diet up to 20-30gm a day in patient with diverticulosis.

Diverticulosis: That indicates that you have small pockets in the lining of the colon. It is a very common finding in people who eat a diet that includes animal fat. Management is directed toward a diet that is low in fat and high in fiber. If the pocket gets inflamed or infected, it is called diverticulitis and requires antibiotics and close monitoring.
