Cough: Most new coughs resolve by themselves within a few weeks but if it doesn't, you should see a doctor. Commonly coughs are caused by viral or bacterial infections but there are a number of other causes like asthma, allergy, dust, heart conditions. Over the counter cough syrups can give a little bit of relief (usually containing codeine/pholcodeine) but their benefit is modest at best.
