Mostly not: Pinkeye ( viral conjunctivitis ) for the most part is caused by a virus. Sometimes you can get a bacterial infection as well. Less often the primary problem is bacteria. Erithmycin ointment is effective for bacterial conjunctivitis. It's usually given as an ointment as there's no benefit from giving it orally. Bacterial infections are purulent and have more of a yellow green thick discharge.

Not usually.: Pink eye is typically a viral illness. However if bacterial conjunctivitis is a concern, Erythromycin drops may be prescribed.
