Many do: Its the normal way your retina fires off when tugged on by the vitreous (jelly) of the eye, or you are seeing little blood cells circulate. If this is sudden, you must see ophthal promptly to rule out retinal tear.

Many potential: can be due to disease of the nerve to the eye, i.e. optic neuritis to a problem with the eye chamber itself, such as a detached retine, retinitis pigmentosa... Can also be a migraine phenomenom if brief and associated (followed by ) a headache.
