Salt water rinse: After a septoplasty, there is usually blod clots and crusting that can linger in the nasal cavity. Generally it is safe to use a saline mist spray or even a saline rinse (no tap water - distilled water only). Your surgeon would be the best to tell you what else you can do. If it is really bothersome, your surgeon can usually clean out the nasal cavity in the office if the home remedies dont work.

About a week: During the first week you should be careful to not forcefully blow you nose because of bleeding risks. After a week or so you can frequently use nasal saline spray and gently clear it. The breathing will gradually improve as the swelling goes away. Be careful to not bump your nose during the first month.

Septoplasty care: Each nasal surgeon has their own post-surgical care instructions. Commonly, saline rinse and an ointment is used twice daily after surgery to keep the nose clean and moist. One should be able to breath better soon after surgery, but it may take several weeks to appreciate the improvement.
