Within minutes: The intravascular volume and sodium concentrations are monitored closely by the brain. Once excess volume is detected, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion is inhibited to allow for excess (free) water to be promptly excreted. This is why you have to void after drinking a cup of coffee. You don't need the volume, so you dump it.
