Yes: Is she taking all of them at once? Well, regardless, hallucinations in the elderly is delirium until ruled out. It could be a simple urinary tract infection even, but delirium is brain failure and needs to be evaluated immediately. Please get her to an er asap. Delirium can be very painful for the patient if they still retain insight. I've been through it before post-op. Please take her there now!

Narcotic effects: Hallucinations is not a common side effect of dilaudid, oxycodone, or nucynta (tapentadol). Nucynta may cause hallucinations dilaudid and oxycodone may cause continued ringing or buzzing in the ears. Please see a psychiatrist for assessment of hallucinations, and other effects due to narcotic medications.

Yes.: Have the woman consult with the physician prescribing the pain medications and review all of the symptoms she is experiencing. She may have some other medical illness, and it is being masked by the pain meds. She may not be taking them as prescribed. She may be experiencing medication interactions. She needs to be closely monitored and talk to her doctor.

Absolutely YES: Why is a 72 yr old women taking dilaudid, oxycodone, and/or nucynta, (tapentadol) for chronic back pain? Not only are there GI effects such as nausea and constipation, but there is risk of sleep apnea, delirium, and cardiac arrhythmias. In my opinion, you need to find a geriatrician and get this under control.
