Different parts: All terms refer to inflammation of different parts. Pericarditis refers to the outer lining of the heart, myocarditis to inflammation of the heart muscle itself, and endocarditis referrs to inflammation of the endothelial cells of the heart , but usually is meant to describe inflammation of the heart valves. The causes of inflammation at either site may be viral, bacterial, trauma, or autoimmune.
