Not necessarily: Ultrasound examinations of kidneys usually report upon echogenicity. It refers to appearance of bounced ultrsound waves from the kidney. Kidney stones are hyperechoic or very echogenic. Cysts or urine in kidney r hypoechogenic (low in echogenicity). Calcium deposits ; scar tissue have increased echogenicity. Kidney pyramids, containing urine filled collecting ducts are relatively hypoechoic/normal.
