My kidneys hurt on both sides sometimes severe but the pain isn't in my back. what could this be?

Infection: The two usual causes of kidney pain (other then being kicked in the back) are kidney stones and infection (pyelonephritis). Do you have fever? How do you know the pain is originating in your kidneys? Do you have abdom pain? Nausea? Vomiting? Chills?
