Not advisable : I would not take both at the same time because these medications do the same thing and can have additive effects if used together. They are both antihistamines for the treatment of allergies. If one of these alone is not helping, sometimes switching to the other one is helpful. Different molecules: Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine called ceterizine and Allegra is fexofenadine. They both block histamine type 1 receptors on cells and diminish the allergic reaction. Overall, they have the same effect for people, but some people prefer one more than the other based on their personal responses to the rx.

Decongestants: Most allergy medicines contain antihistamines, decongestants or a combination of the two. Antihistamines help runny, watery  or  itchy nose or eyes. Decongestants help congestion and stuffiness. Allegra, claritine and  zyrtec are pure antihistamines. Allegra d, Claritin (loratadine) d and zyrtec d contain pseudo Ephedrine  ( sudafed).).          'd' stands for decongestant. At night it can keep you awake.

For many, yes.: Pharmacologically it does not make a lot of sense, but any severe or chronic allergy sufferer will tell you that one med seems to lose effectiveness after a while and if use other, it works again when return to using it.

Allergies: Get a prescription from your doc for steroid nasal spray and singulair (montelukast)

Very rare : Hives usually come and go randomly.  So you may confuse an outbreak with being caused by something else (though not really). So best to see an allergist.

Dose?: Zyrtec & Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are very similar. He should get similar relief if he's taking the right dose for his weight.  Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will make him more drowsy.  You should talk to his doctor about an rx nose spray to control allergies like Flonase or nasonex.

Antihistamine: Allegra (fexofenadine) comes in a self dissolving pill that gets absorved faster through the oral mucosa.
