why does zoloft (sertraline) cause vivid dreams?

Side effect: It sounds like a side effect. I would run it by the doctor that prescribed the zoloft (sertraline). Unless it causes sedation, i advise my patients to take their zoloft (sertraline) in the mornings. Also, zoloft (sertraline) is absorbed 50 % better with food, another reason to take it the morning, after breakfast.

It's yours: If you like it - enjoy it. If you're not sure, watch and keep a diary w/ your thoughts and feelings day by day about the effects. Report them to your therapist/doctor if you want a 2nd opinion to yours. If it's raining on a day w/ only a 20% chance - do you get less wet? How common doesn't matter - this is you. Healthy will mean feeling okay more than not and able to do what you need/want to do.

Crazy dreams: Depends on what they are. For example, dreams of blood & violence could relate to bipolar states, dreams of death & loss could mean depression or ptsd, dreams that wake you up in sweat could mean anxiety disorder, etc.  Consult a therapist or psychiatrist experienced in dream interpretation.

Cipralex: Another brand of celexa, (citalopram) an ssri antidepressant, cipralex can cause vivid dreams.

Paradoxical effect: People often feel groggy and less rested in the morning after taking benadryl (diphenhydramine). Sleep is composed of repetitive cycles of non-rem and rem sleep. Dreams during rem sleep tend to be vivid, visual and story-like.  It is thought that Benadryl (diphenhydramine) affects our rem sleep, possibly by decreasing it. Why decreased rem sleep causes vivid dreaming is a mystery, but it can. It's also common with antidepressants.

Sleep study: Sleep study would probably shed some light -no pun intended-. Overweight, for example is a condition sensed as normal (not sick) but still provoke certain problems, even serious sometimes. Ask your dr, have some checkup anyway (i know, you said you are not sick). Best wishes.

Possibly: The pill itself shouldn't cause the symptoms above.  However, if taking in high amount, hyperthyroidism can cause insomnia and disrupt sleeping patterns.

Likely: If you noticed the vivid dreams after beginning the Lexapro (escitalopram) that is likely the cause. It is very common for people to get vivid dreams on psychiatric medications.

Normal?: Vivid dreams and nightmares are possible with hydrocodone and any other centrally acting medication.

No, you cannot consider an adverse effect normal.

The question is if this adverse effect inteferes with your life and your sleep enough to warrant discontinuation or change to another medication.

Risks vs benefit needs to be carefully considered by you and your prescriber.
