The two are similar: Tonsillitis can be from strep throat, a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies, irritants, or acid reflux. Usually, a person sees a doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly. If getting stomach symptoms from strep throat treatment, one's doctor can recheck. Clarithromycin is very similar to Zithromax.

Good question: Azithromycin  is a 5 day antibiotic and therefore if you are not significantly better in a week, the antibiotic is not effective.  It is imperative for both physicians and patients to know that zithromax has no antibacterial activity against h. Influenza, an extremely common pathogen causing infections in the upper respiratory tract.  Therefore it is not the antibiotic of choice for tonsillitis.

See the doctor: This sounds quite severe. If you cannot eat and have such severe symptoms you might need the hospital where they can give you IV antibiotics and IV fluids. I would want to know if they cultured you as well-so they can give you the right antibiotics. Try some hot ginger tea or ginger candy for the localized throat symptoms. I think though you need the doctor - I would call and tell them u need help

Get rechecked: get a repeat strept test and also a mononucleosis test, since mono can mimic the world's worse sore throat.

See below: If you have simple viral pharyngitis, your symptoms should go away gradually over a period of about one week. If you have strep throat, your symptoms should subside within two to three days after you begin taking antibiotics. If no improvement, you should see your MD again.

COVID 19: Not sure what you are asking. You didn't tell us when you first began showing symptoms. Can't say for sure if your symptoms are related to COVID19. However, someone who has a COVID 19 infection who is still symptomatic may spread infection.

: With tonsillitis you only see the enlarged tonsil and exudate but in peritonsillar abscess you will see the engorged swelling of the pharyngeal structure next to the inflammed tonsil and it pushes to tonsil to the uvula. High fever and painful swallowing are prominent in peritonsillar abscess and you are quite sick, much more than tonsillitis. Please see your doctor or visit urgent care.
