will xifaxan 550 mg treat bad breath acid reflux/gut? i was prescribed this from gi doctor was diagnosed was gastritis but doctor wouldnt listen to me about the bad breath then just said to try this and said goodbye. so im weary about it?

Xfaxan: Xifaxan is a poorly absorbed antibiotic used to treat travellers diarrhea caused by E Coli bacteria, irritable bowel syndrome &amp; impending liver coma. I doubt efficacy for acid reflux or for bad breath. The latter is helped by chewing gum,ducking on hard candy &amp; avoiding certain foods like onions and garlic. Treat gastritis with bland diet, avoiding caffeine, alcohol,aspirin,&amp; taking acid blockers

i was prescribed xifaxan (rifaximin) 550 mg tablet but can not afford it, is there an alternative and  if so where can i find it?

Xifaxan (rifaximin) : Unfortunately there are ok alternatives to xifaxan (rifaximin). It is unique in a way that it is not absorbed and works only in the bowel to kill pathogens and in your case to prevent hepatic encephalopathy. You should talk to your doctor about it and continue lactulose for now.

can xifaxan 550 pills be cut into smaller pieces or crushed? they are too big to swallow.

Unfortunately not: unfortunately due to the coating and the mechanism of its release, splitting or crushing the pill is not advised. if you are unable to take it with apple sauce or water I suggest calling your doctor for an alternative

Possibly: Can cause nausea and upset stomach so i suppose that could lead to decreased appetite.

Yes you can: There is no adverse effects if you eat yogurt while on xifaxan (rifaximin).

i'm supposed to take xifaxan (rifaximin) 3x a day. what time should i take each dose to space it out? should i wake up in the middle of the night to take a dose?

No: No, you do not have to take it at regular intervals, around breakfast, lunch and dinner will suffice.
6:00, 14:00, 22:00 will work, too, and that will be at regular intervals without getting up in the middle of the night.

Check with MD.: Alcohol can make dizziness (a side effect) worse. Discuss this with your doctor.  We don't know about any other meds you are taking or your overall health.  Talk to your doc to be sure before drinking alcohol.

Maybe temporary fix: If U have ibs due to sibo (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)--antibiotics like xifaxan (rifaximin) may help (is being studied 4 repeat use). Sibo may also occur from anatomic variations in the small bowel, altered small bowel motility, or a variety of systemic conditions that prevent permanent cure (e.g. The bacteria just grow back). Xifaxan (rifaximin) is also curative for C.difficile in appropriate dose &amp; setting.

Rifaximin: I guess you're taking Rifaximin for treatment of hepatic encephalopathy.  In that case, i would recommend you avoid alcohol and high protein diet.

i took xifaxan (rifaximin) for sibo. it's been a week and a half since i finished and my lower gi hurts more. i can't work. could i have done permanent damage?

Not likely: Xifaxan (rifaximin) treats bacterial overgrowth in the gut, traveler's diarrhea , and can also be used to treat hepatic encephalopathy caused by liver disease.  It stays in the gut, and is not absorbed into the bloodstream. It can cause c difficile associated diarrhea, which can be a serious problem. See your MD since you are worse.
