why would my doctor order a lower lumbar x-ray for an ovarian cyst (2-3in) ? i've already had a positive ct scan and ultrasound/sonogram.

Not sure?: An X-ray of the lumbar spine is not usually necessary for the evaluation of an ovarian cyst. Perhaps you mentioned having back pain? If not, then I'm not certain why it was ordered. Best to ask your doctor.   Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Not Well: If there is a large ovarian cyst there can be a suggestion of a nonspecific pelvic mass. Ultrasound is far better.

Ovarian cyst on x ra: No you cannot see a cyst on an x ray unless it has calcium in it. Look ip dermoid cyst on google. You would need a pelvic ultrasound.

Ultrasound: I would recommend following the cyst with ultrasounds.  Most cysts in young women are benign and can be followed during pregnancy without the concern for needing surgical intervention.  What are the ultrasound characteristics of the cyst?

xray: An xray doesn't show an ovarian cyst.  That is diagnosed with ultrasound, ct, or mri.

: No, that would be exceedingly unusual. By definition, a cyst is filled with fluid and a simple cyst has no features that make it suspicious. Cysts come and go normally with your cycles and typically represent eggs at some stage towards ovulation. If a simple cyst persists over several cycles, continues to grow, or becomes symptomatic , it might need further management but cancer is still unlikely.

2nd time in 3 months an u/s has shown bilateral  ovarian cysts. but i thought only one ovary ovulates each month? r ovary hurts, cyst is 1cm.

Bilateral cysts: A one cm ovarian cyst is quite small and in the process of ovulation production both ovaries are stimulated and cysts sometimes forms. You are correct that ovaries generally alternate ovulation, but unless you have PCOS most cysts are benign and unilateral.

No: Simple ovarian cysts are usually benign (not cancer) in a woman in her early 30s.    If they become large or painful, they can be removed with laparoscopic surgery but frequently go away on their own.

Yes it can: Complex cysts can be cancerous depending on their size and rate of growth. A CA125 test can help decide its nature. Ultrasound is a good test to measure increase in size and also may show any solid components inside the cyst.
