Pain: Your doctor should provide suggestions on that as well. He may choose to give you a pain killer prior to that (called premedication). The choice should be his since he knows you better.

what do you suggest to relieve wound packing pain?

Premedicate: Take pain medication prior to the procedure.  I personally like to give patients rapid onset opioids (roo) in these situations.  Medications such as subsys, Actiq or Fentora can be a big help.  The key however is to take the medication in advance of the painful procedure.

i was wondering if there is anything other than iodized packing strips you can use to pack a wound i am having trouble finding that particular thing?

Options available: You could replace the iodized packing strips with saline moisturized sterile gauze if that is available to you.

Accepted Answer

Replace: The gauze packing with clean gauze.  Although there are better products than plain gauze for packing a wound, if your health provider recommended gauze, it should be changed about every 12 hours to help prevent bacteria growth and possible wound infection.

Depends: It will depend on the size and location of your wound. Risk for pain, bleeding and drainage are also factors to consider. Hopefully you have instructions from your provider. If not, then okay to call in, or go in for advise. That provider knows your case. Be well.

Depends a lot: If you are talking about 'packing' this must be a good sized wound, i dislike the term packing as a wound shouldn't be stuffed full rather very lightly filled with a dressing. How long? Depends on how much drainage there is and what materials are soaking it up.  A wound specialist will try to adjust dressings to last at least two days.  Please see a wound specialist.

Packing: It will depend on the type of surgery or wound, but is usually changed daily.  Your surgeon's office should be able to provide the definitive answer.

is wound packing visible? i am not sure if the packing came out. the abscess was drained and packed but i cannot see any packing.

Yes, packing: material is visible. It is possible that the intended "tail" of the packing has moved into the wound; the wound will have to be explored to find the "tail." I seriously doubt that the packing could have come out without your knowing about it.  Perhaps you were instructed in changing your dressing and repacking your wound. See if you can find the tail using your instructions. If not, go in to Doc.

i had an abscess that was cut and drained in my navel a couple days ago and he packed my wound with this packing stuff. he did not tell me how long to leave it in and i am concerned on if it should be removed?

OK to remove: Packing abscesses doesn't really prevent recurrent infection. Keep the area covered with a bandage if it is draining and keep it clean by washing with soap and water daily. Thanks for trusting HealthTap!

Yes!: The point of draing and packing space and then removing the packing and repacking is to prevent an &amp;&amp;andinfection from setting in there.  It is not the cleanest part of your body and it will take a while to fully heal. The incision and drainage (I &amp; D) is more important to your cure than whatever antibiotics that you may be taking.
