Alcoholism: Alcoholism is a disease of the brain wherein alcohol produces a euphoric but toxic response in a 20% of the population. This same percentage has a tendency to depression and treatment with antidepressants can help but stopping exposure to alcohol is the only treatment that works. Most 12 step programs have the highest rate of  effective treatment, which is life long.

Alcoholism: Alcoholism is frequently accompanied by depression, insomnia, suicidality, and anxiety.  Sometimes another mental health disorder precedes the alcohol abuse.  Social phobia can be a frequent problem in alcoholics; bipolar illness as well.  In mania, sometimes an alcoholic in recovery will start drinking again, or abuse drugs too. Dual diagnosis programs are needed to help these people effectively.

No: Saw a 2 year old die of alcohol poisoning once, and of course lots of children with fetal alcohol syndrome. Major problems, all of them.

Sort of: Hypnosis works as well as cognitive behavioral therapy and neurolinguistic programing to help with alcoholism.  None of these techniques will help if the patient isn't willing to change their life.

Depends: Some treatments work, and some don't.  Depends on many factors including the addict, the addiction substance(s), the health of the addict, the therapy and the therapist skill.

Addiction: Alcohol can be robustly abused by someone but as long as the person is not addicted to it, and doesn't miss it after putting it down, the diagnosis is alcohol abuse. If, however, the person feels either physically or psychologically addicted/dependent on it and either cannot go a day without it, or binge drinks uncontrollably the diagnosis is alcohol dependence.

Abstain from Alcohol: I am not sure what you mean by minor liver problems. One's liver can repair itself, if the damage is not too severe. A blood test can be used to determine the extent of the damage and also how much one's liver is able to return to normal functioning.

Yes: Yes if they cannot feed themselves like babies and toddlers. Addiction need ability to access the substance and compulsion/cravings that cannot be controlled so starts at the level of middle school and becomes a problem then on.

Psychiatrists: Psychiatrists, addiction medicine physicians, psychologists, ; counselors are trained to help in these areas.  Inpatient treatment may be needed, but the greatest expanse of care happens in outpatient settings.  12 steps work for those who work them, and are the most common type of recovery ; support groups. Addiction Medicine +: Please consider seeing an addiction medicine doctor, as there are some medications which can decrease craving for alcohol.  This is only part of the process though, as you must also learn different ways of dealing with life than drinking alcohol.
