Alcoholism: Alcoholism is a disease of the brain wherein alcohol produces a euphoric but toxic response in a 20% of the population. This same percentage has a tendency to depression and treatment with antidepressants can help but stopping exposure to alcohol is the only treatment that works. Most 12 step programs have the highest rate of effective treatment, which is life long.

A serious one.: Alcoholism is a disease that affects mind, body & spirit. One loses control of alcohol use, is preoccupied w alcohol & continues to drink alcohol in spite of problems related to it's use. One may drink more than intended & over time may need to drink larger amounts of alcohol to obtain the same effect. Attempts to cut down on use or to stop use may have been unsuccessful.
