Accepted Answer

No: Tonsil surgery is helpful in the treatment of recurrent tonsil/throat strep infections, recurrent peritonsillar abscess, sleep disordered breathing, sleep apnea due to large tonsils.  It has not helpful in treatment of allergic disease.

Accepted Answer

Rarely: Some may benefit from tonsillectomy if they develop sleep apnea symptoms in early to middle childhood. Most allergic kids will not.

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: It is common to see children with chronic nasal congestion have enlarged tonsils and adenoids, some of them have allergies too, but one usually does not lead to the other.

Accepted Answer

Possible: If you have other allergic conditions such as hay fever and the tonsil swells up during the peak allergy season, then the answer is yes.  On the other hand, if the swelling is progressive or perennial, then one needs to consider other causes as well and an ENT evaluation may be needed.

Help What?: Getting tonsils removed is not likely to help with allergies.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex, if you have sex. 
Get HPV vaccine

Post nasal drip: The Pnd is probably not related.

my son is 7 and we know from past visits he has really large tonsils. the past couple months he coughs all the time, ive treated for allergies and nothing has worked. i am thinking that his tonsils may be the culprit and may need to be taken out. ?

Accepted Answer

: "Large tonsils" do not cause a prolonged cough.  However, he could have developed an obstructive sleep apnea which constitutes an indication for tonsillectomy. Have him checked.

my 3 yr olds tonsils touch his uvula,he is a picky eater,breath always smells bad,gags easily and it seems like he has allergies always. concerned?

Accepted Answer

Apnea?: If he snores he may also have apnea in which case an sleep screen and ENT evaluation is warranted.
Otherwise, large tonsils are often best left alone because he will "grow into them"  He probably also has adenoids which can cause nasal congestion and mouth breathing so allergy treatment is usually ineffective. Best wishes.

Get checked: Even if you feel fine, you need to rule out a strep infection or tonsil abscess which can potentially cause cardiac problem if gone untreated on occasions  However mono can present with a similar picture.  And yes, your bad breath may be related to it.

Accepted Answer

Fever?: If you have body aches and a fever, it is probably an infection. A sore throat from allergies is usually diffuse and not localized to one side of the throat.
