A member asked:

My son is 7 and we know from past visits he has really large tonsils. the past couple months he coughs all the time, ive treated for allergies and nothing has worked. i am thinking that his tonsils may be the culprit and may need to be taken out. ?

"Large tonsils" do not cause a prolonged cough. However, he could have developed an obstructive sleep apnea which constitutes an indication for tonsillectomy. Have him checked.

Third party insurance has set standards for covering this once universal surgery in kids. Five strep throats in a year, sleep apnea shown by testing, and a few other qualifications would be covered, this would not. Tonsils tend to grow faster than the kid up until age 8 when they stop and the kid continues to grow, leading them to become relatively smaller. The cough is not from tonsils.
