Not an easy answer.: This may sound insensitive, but unfortunately if the people that you spend time with do not respect you enough to stop smoking around you to help you with your health problem, then you may need to find other people to spend time with.  Maybe mention to them that smoking will cause chronic bronchitis if they continue.

Accepted Answer

Not completely: Stopping smoking is most essential.  You wont heal 100% but you may improve significantly.  Also, you will slow the rate of any future deterioration.  Water and jogging have less clear benefit but they are both part of a healthy lifestyle and should be encouraged (unless your doctor has warned you against these).

As little as...: ...A few days to a week, in a sensitive person. We pediatricians see it all the time in children exposed to secondhand smoke.

Good question: If we knew the answer to this one we could help a whole lot more people.  Their addiction to the nicotine causes them to do something very harmful to their body.  They need help for this; unfortunately, they must first want help.  Work on this with love and kindness; with gentle  and frequent tags on scientific information and matters of the heart to try and bring them around.

how does smoking cause chronic bronchitis? and how long does it take?

There : There are hundreds of chemicals in smoke that irritate and inflame cells in the airway. This leads to spasm of airway muscles and an influx of inflammatory cells that lead to chronic cough. In addition there is an increase in the number of mucus producing cells that causes increased phlegm production. If you have a cough on most days of most months then that defines chronic bronchitis. This develops at various rates and times of cumulative smoking, not all people have the same susceptibility to the effects of cig smoking. 10 pack years (1 pack a day x 10 years)  is an average amount however.

can you tell me if it's possible for a 17 year old male to develop chronic bronchitis from smoking ganja once?

Accepted Answer

Unlikely: chronic means for a long time. It probably would take multiple episodes of smoking ganja in order to develop chronic bronchitis. You might get acute bronchitis, which  is  a sudden development of bronchitis, that could be caused by irritation to your bronchi from the ingredients in the smoke. This should however resolve if you dont continue to smoke.

i am currently taking chantix to stop smoking  and i'm also on steroids for bronchitis. are these two medications safe ?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Prednisone for short periods of time is safe. Chantix however is under scrutiny after a canadian study was published this summer showing a high risk of stroke and heart attack in patients taking the drug.  Like all medication the risk must be balanced by the benefit.  I have had a lot of patients have high success with chantix.

started smoking 2 weeks ago. got fever, cough w/mucus. can an md see whether its chronic or acute bronchitis? i have quit smoking (2ndhand smoker +yrs)

Accepted Answer

Acute.: Chronic bronchitis requires several months of symptoms and in the absence of an underlying bronchitis cannot possibly be induced by smoking for two weeks.  Good for quitting.

i have reflux, gerd and ibs chronic bronchitis. if i can get those other things under control. i should be able to heal completely. i am healthy never sick except this last year. i have gotten asthma and spit out mucus. i am 43 & don't smoke why???

Maybe: If the reflux and GERD is causing stomach acid to “back up” from your stomach down your bronchial tubes, then your bronchitis and cough will continue until the GERD is fixed.  Potentially serious (over the long term)

can my lungs heal themselves if i stop smoking?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Yes, it is possible for your lungs to heal to a certain extent provided one stops eary enough before severe permanent damage/scarring or disease has set in. By definition, one has COPD if one has smoked a pack daily of cigarettes for 20 years or more. Statistically, if one stops early enough one's risk of getting lung cancer decreases to non smoker levels if one quits for 5 years or more!
