i was just diagnosed with a normal 1.7cm ovarian cyst on my right ovary via ultra sound. is it safe if it ruptures?

Sort of...: It can be very painful as the abdomen does not like any other fluid in it!  not blood (why a tiny amount of endometriosis is so painful), and not cyst fluid. Might be smart to talk to doc about emergency pain meds in case you have to come to the er. It also depends on the cyst-it could have just been a ruptured follicle. If you ever get severe low abdominal pain, go to er-let them know it's there.

Wait couple of wks: Even though no fluid there will be inflammatory reaction which will take couple of wks to clear, and visit your gyn doctor.

Probably would: Leaking or ruptured cysts contain fluid or sometimes blood. Ultrasound is excellent for looking for that fluid.

Ovulation: Ovulation mid cycle pain. May be caused by release of blood. The lining of the abdomen and pelvis the peritoneum very sensitive to even small quantities.

my doctor suspects endometriosis or twisting of my left ovary (ultra sound shows no cysts). what are the distinct differences in those two things?

Difference: Endometriosis is the spread of endometrial tissue from beyond the inside of the uterus into different parts of the abdomen and pelvis.  This tissue "menstruates" along with a typical cycle, which can causes enormous pain.  Ovarian torsion is the twisting of the ovary (and its vascular supply) along its axis, which can starve the ovary of blood and cause pain.

i had a ovarian cyst ruptured. i had fluid showing on ultrasound. how long will the pain last after rupture? its been 4 days or so?

Accepted Answer

: The pain is usually a reflection of the random blood pool that accumulates after the rupture. The body will break down and absorb the material over time, usually a week or so, Comfort measures like a heat source over the belly and ibuprofen will help. The bigger the fluid pool the longer it will take.

ER: certainly go to your ER or UC clinic. Usually a ruptured ovarian cyst is quite painful; however, if bleeding, this can cause your issues.

would a pelvic ultrasound show when a dermoid ovarian cyst has ruptured? what would it show?

Rupture is serious: Dermoids can have hair and teeth in them,  so are complex on U/S,. The black stuff in the picture is hair. They often grow slowly but rarely rupture. If so, it's like appendicitis and needs immediate surgery.
U/S is a good screen for ovarian masses, but with a "surgical pelvis" CT is done. An early sign of impending rupture on U/S might be fluid in the pelvis, but this is not diagnostic.

Accepted Answer

Cyst likely: New onset one sided pain most likely DX is ovarian cyst or ectopic pregnancy.  Bleeding at correct time on bcp makes ectopic less likely, but cysts happen at times even on bcp, rarely produce pain unless rupture.

i had a large ovarian cyst rupture about a week and half ago. i was in bad pain. ultrasound showed fluid. the pain is improving each day. little pain left in pelvic and hip. but much much better. do i need go back to doc or can i wait a little longer?

: See your GYN physician for an exam and further testing, and ask about low dose oral bcp's to reduce cyst formation and pre-menopausal estrogen withdrawal symptoms at age "42".
