Sleep apnea or: Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common cause of this symptom, but there are other causes (including ondine's curse).  A sleep study will show precisely what the cause is.

how can you know if you are going into deep sleep? i have had trouble falling asleep, do not have dreams and wake up feeling unrefreshed and like i did not fall asleep at all for about a year now.

bought step tracker watch that also tracks sleep. says i get about 3 hrs deep sleep and 4 hrs light sleep, give or take, is this enough? i tend to fall asleep around midnight and wake 7am, while waking up in b/w for 5 min or so. feel bit tired in am?

: You might want to read any instructions that came with your sleep tracker to see what they say about light and deep sleep. Normal sleep consists of both, and the amounts you mention sound reasonable. If you are still tired upon waking after 7 hours, try gradually inching back the time you go to sleep, to allow you an extra hour or so overall.

Ans: I suggest you put yourself on a sleep schedule. In other words go to bed the same time each night. You should fall asleep within an hour watch tv if this relaxes you. Try this And see how you do. Sounds like you are sleeping for you get up refreshed

Here is an option: The first question is are you over weight or obese?  If your sleep apnea is due to obesity first concentrate on weight loss. If you are morbidly obese then consider an appointment with a bariatric surgeon. Simple solution is to put the head of the bed on some 2x4 to elevate your head. Discuss this with your primary or lung specialist that diagnosed your sleep apnea.

Get a check-up: There are two terms doctors use often for shortness of breath in bed: "orthopnea" which is not being able to lie flat without feeling short of breath and "PND" which is similar to what you describe, that is, waking up short of breath after being asleep.  You may need an evaluation for a possible sleep disorder and also heart and lung studies.  If you also have leg swelling, see your doctor soon!

Need supervision: The only reason that I can think of for having breathing issues following wisdom teeth removal is narcotic use. If you can breathe normally and don't have any throat swelling, be careful with narcotic dosage. This can decrease your drive to breathe normally. If you've taken narcotics and are sleepy, make sure someone is with you and can monitor your breathing.

? sleep study: Most likely, a trigger occurs causing this.  Could wonder about a panic attack, a reaction to myoclonus as you fall asleep, post-nasal drip from sinuses, GERD, RLS.  Doubtful you have sleep apnea due to age.  Need to sort out, so, get a virtual consult, and decide whether a sleep study would be next step. (overnight pulse oximeter study might suffice?).  Get basic evaluation and then proceed.
