what does it mean when you have black taste buds?

Black hairy tongue: Somehow you have developed what sounds like lack hairy tongue.  It is an imbalance in the bacterial flora of the mouth.  It can be brought on by taking antibiotics or using a mouthrise (hydrogen peroxide) that kills some of the "good" bacteria that keeps things in balance.  If your are taking meds or using such a rinse...Stop it and the problem should go away.  Antibiotics..Talk to who prescribed.

Stain: The tongue is made up of filiform papilla on the surface which are like little fingers.  They can stain from smoking and sometimes discolor with sjogren's syndrome.

Black taste buds: Have you been on an antibiotic.  If so black color should disappear as you come off the medication.  Contact whoever prescribed the antibiotic to report this issue.  If not on antibiotic, please see your Dentist ASAP for examination.

Many possibilities: Have you recently bitten that side of the tongue? It could be an area of healing. It could also be a stained portion of the normal papilla due to foods or beverages. It could also be normal pigmentation that has appeared due to melanin pigmentation. If it does not dissipate or if it gets larger over the next two weeks, see your dentist for an evaluation.

Difficult : Difficult to say without seeing it, but something that small and unifocal may be a vascular "bud" (capillary plexus) near or part of your taste bud that looks dark to you. Fungal or yeast problems tend to be more diffuse.

Did you lose your : Sense of taste? If you are asking, is it possible to lose your sense of taste forever, yes, it is possible. The first place i would look is, what are your eating habits? Are you eating a lot of spicey foods? If yes, it hopefully wil be temporary. The permanent loss could result from neurological damage like a stroke. It also could happen from a wisdom tooth extraction. Hope this helps.
