about 20 years ago i broke the 5th metatarsal of my left foot.  even though it healed, it's sensitive to touch and cold.  is this normal?

Nerve sensitivity.: No, it's not normal. If you have lived with this phenomena, and it's not getting worse, then why treat it. If it's becoming a concern, then by all means have it evaluated.

This could be: Vascular (arteries) or neurologic.  Usually, if it's vascular, there is pain too.  Autonomic nerves control how much your arteries constrict or dilate, which can cause your foot to be cold (or warm).  Either start with your pcp or see a podiatrist.

Possibly so.Find out: the cause and treat that! There has to be something else going on that you need to follow and pay attention to. Make sure to have your doctor explore all possibilities. You need good blood flow everywhere to maintain temperature &amp; circulation. Work with an integrative medicine doctor to consider the wholistic view with all the meds you're on too.Have your core temp taken, and thyroid function too.

Maybe, Maybe not: It could be, but i would need to know more, from history to presentation and physical exam to be sure. It could also be from blood flow issues, unusual things like raynauds, or a few other things. Nerve damage can present this way, but temperature fibers are usually affected shortly after sensation, so if you still have full sensation, it might not be neuropathy. Hope this helps!

twice in the past week my left foot from the ankle down turned ice cold to the touch & completely numb as i slept. what can it be?

Depends: You could be putting pressure on a nerve in your foot from the way you sleep but it can also mean there is some nerve impingement as high as your lower back. I suggest you see a Podiatrist first for an evaluation and a possible NCV (nerve conduction velocity) test of the lower extremity might be useful in determining your diagnosis.

Neuropathy: It can be presentation of single nerve root compression as systemic diseases usually cause more generalized symptoms. If you have other symptoms please mention otherwise with stretching exercising it should resolve. Sometimes due to obesity you can have compressed nerve. Need to know little more history.
