Avoid salt: There is no easy answer here, could this be an allergic reaction?  Hard to say.  The salt could cause a histimine release and cause the tongue to swell.  I would stay away from processed foods and switch to a low salt more natural diet.

Tongue Swelling: Often times, medications that cause the mouth to get dry can lead to tongue biting.  In addition, people with sleep and snoring issues often bite their tongues when they sleep.  Sometimes, you can see crenations on the side of the tongue, which clearly indicate an episode of chewing on the lateral borders of the tongue and/or dry mouth.  Try an oral rinse like biotene to relieve your symptoms.

Think allergy: This could indicate an allergy.  Perhaps you should consult an allergist.  No dental reason for this.  Also could be a nonspecific neurological thing called angioneurotic edema, but that usually comes and goes intermittantly with no correlation to much of anything except sometimes trauma.  Good luck!

Tongue: Most likely cause is a clogged salivary gland with a mucous plug or calcific plug. Once the plug passes or is removed the swelling goes away. I recommend seeing your oral surgeon to have it checked and if needed treated.

Probably from trauma: If it is not red and painful with exudate, it is
probably swollen from traumatizing it.  
It should no longer be swollen at three months.

Try not to play with it or bump it with food.  Putting something cold on it, like an ice pack, might help.  Otherwise, take the metal out of it for six weeks and see if that helps.

If it is red, swollen and painful, see your doctor.

Sleep: If you have sleep apnea it can create negative pressure and tongue can enlarge due to negative pressure this happens over a long time. Acute tongue swelling everynight may be a reaction to medication, food, drink or acute problem causing negative intrathoracic pressure. Please go to er.
