Sleep: If you have sleep apnea it can create negative pressure and tongue can enlarge due to negative pressure this happens over a long time. Acute tongue swelling everynight may be a reaction to medication, food, drink or acute problem causing negative intrathoracic pressure. Please go to er.

Check with your doc: I wonder if this is angioedema. May be you have allergies to something, such as food? Maybe Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will help? Breathing problems during the night? You may need a sleep study? Check with your doc.
