Stress Hormones: Broken  Heart syndrome or apical balooning as some call it results from severe stress like the loss of a loved one, during the episode which usually resolves in a wk time, the person may experience chest pain and shortness of breath, there is some disruption of the normal pumping functions of the heart. if chest pain and SOB continue, one needs to seek medical help

Takotsubo syndrome: The ventricular wall thins and balloons out - overall contractility (ejection fraction) falls. Many mechanisms have been proposed but the actual cause is not known.  It is not due to blocked coronary arteries.

: This is quite an unlikely scenario. Intense fear can precipitate a heart attack in those with significant coronary artery disease but this would not fall into the category of Takotsubo syndrome.

Temporary weak heart: Takotsubo cardiomyopathy: a weakening of the heart often associated with emotional stress.  Not resulting from a coronary problem a ballooning of the apex of the heart is seen with poor function.  May be very sick at presentation but with supportive care (sometimes requiring balloon pump) usually recover.  Medications that stimulate the heart (inotropes) may actually make the situation worse.

Yes: Also called takotsubo's cardiomyopathy because the apex of the heart tends to "balloon" making it look like the japanese term for an octopus trap which the heart resembles when affected. Although associated with significant stressors like death of a loved one, etc.. It can be seen in the absence of these.

Yes and no: I have seen several patients with broken heart syndrome, almost all of the patients made a remarkable recovery, no one died, the long term prognosis is usually very good. I have not had a recurrence even though this has been reported. A study that followed 41 patient with  broken heart for almost three years, there was 2 recurrences and no deaths.

Have some evals: A family doctor is a good starting place. You may be wise to have some physical tests and to talk to a psychologist too. After they investigate - you can decide together what is wrong and what to do about it. I expect it will be a bit of both - some emotional parts and some physical. You can help them both with good treatments and taking good care of yourself.

when i had broken heart syndrome they said my troponin was over 6, the highest mine has been since w/chest pain is .36 is that of concern or no?

Test results: It's easy to to read too much into test results. The truth is they are only helpful in letting us know that yes, we need to do something or change something or no, let us stay the course. I wouldn't be concerned and would discuss with my doctor.
