Im on 30 mg of prednisone and a puffer ever four hours for the past two days but it has no effect or has not helped the cough is that bad?

How long have you had the cough?  How disruptive is it?  Are you coughing up yellow sputum?  Do you smoke?

You may need antibiotics.   Another modality to try is to put one bottle of hydrogen peroxide into a humidifier, and two bottles (same size) of water.  That gives a 1% aerosolized solution of peroxide.  Kills virus and bacteria on contact, and breaks down into water and oxygen.

Hopefully it is low dose and should be tapered down as a 6--5-4-3-2-1 dosing  over 6 days. Dome physicians just use a twice a day course for no more than 7 days. I always recommend taking this medication on a full stomach and check for side effects: nervousness, stomach irriation, insomnia, etc.

My son just arrived back from a five week trip to shanghai. he is congested, and has a horrible cough.  the dr prescribed prednisone. is that correct?

Prednisone will relieve airway inflammation in a flare of asthma.  Sometimes even in patients without a diagnosis of asthma, wheezing can develop as a result of bronchitis, and prednisone can help ease breathing in this context.  It will not treat the underlying cause of a respiratory infection which is usually a virus, and only time, rest and proper support/self-care treats viral bronchitis.

It's hard to know how worried to be.  On the one hand, coughs are frequent this time of year and 99 degrees does not even qualify as a fever.  On the other hand, he is on steroids that can decrease the immune response and allow an infection to progress.  Where is his pain?  Is it an old pain, related to the ankylosing spondylitis, or a new pain?  Does he have any redness or sores?  Is he breathing deeper or more rapidly?  Is he coughing anything up?  Does he feel tired and sick?

If there are any other worrisome symptoms, then he should be seen immediately to prevent a worsening infection.  Usually your gut can tell you when something is not right.

Yes you can take the two together. There are no interactions between the two to my knowledge.

High doses of corticosteroids like prednisone cause serious health problems, but only with prolonged therapy. Five days treatment is entirely safe if not done repeatedly or too often. How effective it will be is another story, however. Perhaps worth a try, but often has little effect against symptoms of respiratory infection.

Try using 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide and 2 bottles of water in a humidifier, and run it all the time wherever you are.  That will give you an aerosolized solution of 1% peroxide, which will kill viruses and bacteria on contact when you breath it in, which will then break down into water and oxygen.  Completely non-toxic, and should hasten your recovery.

A cousin of prednisone,dexamethazone,  has helped some patients under treatment for covid. However, ingested steroids can reduce your immune response to diseases in general. I would never advise someone to start oral steroids without doing so under direct supervision of a doc who knows all your medical history & physical findings.

when it comes to alcohol is beverages is far too "general" to be good  medical advice.... Since both Prednisone and alcohol are GASTRIC IRRITANTS ,I (personally...my opinion only) would NOT have a drink until I have concluding my Prednisone therapy!!!

Coughing is not best treated with steroids. If you just finished about of using the prednisone, and you feel you need steroids again to control your symptoms of coughing., then you need to call your doctor first to let her or him know that you're having the same symptoms. Then s/he will decide what is best for you to take for your cough, since you have a celiac history. You need to be under medical supervision. This is the safest route.
