Second Opinion: You have the symptoms of a severlely inflamed throat and possibly proximal Eustachian tube. Go and get a second opinion from another doctor. See an ENT if one is close by. Good luck

Infection: with a virus or bacteria.  Most commonly cough with sore throat and chest discomfort is due to a virus.  In most young adults without significant medical problems, these respiratory infections clear up on their own.  Help your body heal itself by getting plenty of rest, and drinking lots of fluids (water, juice, etc.) - avoid too much caffeine.  Robitussin DM or Mucinex (guaifenesin) DM can be helpful.

Could have breathed: Could have breathed in some chemicals that caused irritation.

Dry throat: If your throat hurts more when you wake up in the morning may be because of dryness from possibly sleeping with your mouth open, specially when you have a cold and maybe some nasal congestion.
Tray honey. If is persists beyond your cold, then have your doctor take a look.

Probably infection: Exactly where is uncertain.  The lymph nodes of the upper neck may swell with irritation/inflammation of the throat, teeth, tongue, gums, skin of the face and some of the scalp.
Often mild viral infections of the upper respiratory tract (colds) produce swelling of these nodes without much other symptomatology.
Salt water gargles, Acetaminophen may help.

my son (autistic 7) said his throat hurt and he said he couldn't sleep because of coughing so we gave him cough medicine. he threw up a few minutes later and there was a whole nerf dart! i am not sure if he ate any others, he said no, do i worry?

: Since your son is not likely to be able to give you detailed or necessarily reliable answers, You can only go on how he is acting. If he continues to have discomfort or other complaints, I would take him in to be seen. If the symptoms Resolve now, I would not feel the need for urgent intervention. Good luck.

Sinusitis/bronchitis: Sounds like a URI has turned into a spell of bronchitis.  If the cough is productive of colored mucus, increasing cough and a fever, than you should visit your doctor or an utc for  a thorough examination and perhaps a course of antibiotics.

Not likely cancer: It came on too fast, and cancer is rarely painful to start off with. See doctor to determine if its tender lymph nodes, muscle strain,  or pain along carotid artery (carotidynia).

you might have allergy or sinusitis or viral infection but it's wise to see a doctor to make sure nothing else is going on.

Viral syndrome: This is likely a upper respiratory viral infection in evolution.  Sore throat (pharyngitis) with fever, followed by cough and other flu like symptoms.  Best treatment is rest, plenty of fluids, tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen for aches and fever.  A decongestant and cough suppressant may be helpful when these symptoms arise.  Throat lozenges can help with the sore throat.  If no better in 3-5 days, see MD.
