i wore heels for 3 hrs being on my feet. the next day my big toe hurt badly. i don't usually wear heels. what could be wrong and should i stop yoga?

No, you should stop: wearing high heels! Three hours is a long time to wear uncomfortable shoes that throw your posture off and puts excessive pressure on your balls of your feet &amp; UR toes! U could have strained UR big toe. If it's swollen and inflamed, U can use cool compresses and elevate it, and see if that helps. If not, see your doctor!U can always do yoga from a chair/seated position if standing is hard to do.

Hallux rigidus: Very possibly, you have what is termed "hallux rigidus" or a rigidly fixed great toe joint. This is an "wear and tear" type of arthritic condition localized to this specific joint.  The inability to bend the great toe will limit your ability to propulse, or push-off, during each step, causing you to often transfer your weight to another part of the foot, in  your case, maybe the ball of the foot.

Doubtful if there: Wasn't an acute injury. Have you considered seeing a pedorthist to help you find shoes that are better for the health of your feet ; toes?

Bunion: You probably have a bunion forming.  You can try wearing lower heels with square toe or adding shoe inserts, or see a podiatrist to see if they need to do anything else.

It was likely : Damaged. See a foot doc let him take xrays and he can give you an assessment after examining the range of motion of the joint.

Definitely: As long as your surgeon positions your toe with  enough motion to spring forward, running is not a problem.  Your heel height may need to fall under an inch and a half.

Sesamoiditis: If you have pain around your big toe that gets worse after wearing heels, you may be experiencing pain from either sesamoiditis or bunion pain.  You will have to see a Podiatrist in order to be evaluated clinically. 
Both can be treated conservatively, with rest, ice and changing your shoe gear, and possibly getting custom molded orthotics.

Strain: You are exerting too much pressure on the tendon on top of your toe. You can try and use crutches to assist you in getting around for brief periods of time.  Speak with your surgeon regarding your discomfort .
