Nails or toes?: If you mean the toes themselves, this is a little worrisome.  Usually the skin will turn black if there is tissue death--necrosis--of the skin.  This can happen if blood vessels are damaged or inflamed.  Sometimes, blood under the skin can cause this appearance as well.  If you mean the nails, that can be a sign that a mold has gotten under the nails.  Either way, i recommend a doctor visit.

When someone : Hears that the immediate thought would be gangrene but since you ask matter of factly that does not appear no be the case. Since we don't see your foot this makes it hard to comment. I would advise you see a foot doc or dermatologist.

Vascular problem: Fever with chills and toes that are turning blue black may indicate a serious infection that is affecting your vascular system. I would go to an Emergency Department as soon as possible. If the circulation to your toes is compromised, your tissue may begin to die. Dead tissue can lead to gangrene.

Emergency room now: If this is actively happening now, you need to go to the emergency room as soon as possible.  It sounds as if the blood flow to your toe has stopped and it is in the process of necrosis, or dying.  In addition to losing your toe, it could make you incredibly ill.  This is not something to take lightly.  I wish you a good outcome.

I heard of : Blue toe syndrome before....Black to me connotates gangrene and that would be something you want evaluated ratehr quickly. In the event it is blue - this is still somethign to have evaluated, but black is usually worse than blue. 
I am referring to the toe as opposed to the nail. If it is the nail - just make an appt with the foot doc and they will take care of you. Fungus vs. Dried blood.

Traumatic injury: First things first!  ice and elevate.  Call a local podiatrist in your area and try to get in for an evaluation today or tomorrow for a possible fracture. You at a minimum need a foot x-ray to determine if you fractured the toe.  Otherwise, it is a contusion (bruise) and icing and elevating it will start the process.

Feel the temperature: Simply feel your toe and compare it's temperature to the same toe on the other foot. If it is cold and not even close the  other toe's temperature, you need to get to the emergency room now. If the toe is in severe pain, get to the emergency room. If you have  recent history of bumping the toe and the toe is in a bruised condition, then you are probably fine.
