why do my varicose veins throb during my menstrual cycle?

Hormones play a role: Female hormones such as estrogen fluctuate in our menstral cycle and affect the "stretchiness" of our veins.  This in turn causes the veins to enlarge which makes them throb.  Some women will report similar symptoms on hormone therapy and during pregnancy, when our estrogen levels tend to fluctuate.  If you have significant symptoms, consider wearing compression stockings and see a vein specialist.

varicose veins on l leg with vein valve in groin not functioning. ran into something now bruise on thigh with throbbing pain down whole leg. worry?

Accepted Answer

Not to worry.: The malfunctioning valve probably has no relationship to the bruise and throbbing in your leg. The bruise is secondary to injuring the area and having some localized bleeding.  This would also explain the throbbing.  Heat to the area and tylenol (acetaminophen) should help.  Malfunctioning (refluxing) valves can lead to venous insufficiency.  You should see a vein specialist.

got varicose veins in 1 leg. area just under knee on back throbbing. got bruises near but it hurts above it. better (still there) when walking. dvt?

Accepted Answer

best to get it : Checked in the unlikely event that you have a dvt.  But since DVT can lead to serious complications and are treatable, please call you doctor monday.

Accepted Answer

Yes: You chronic venous insufficiency by history. You are at increased risk for pulmonary embolism. You should be evaluated for DVT. This can be done non-invasively with an venous ultrasound. Because of you symptoms, I would see a physician as soon as you can.

No: They occur before menopause and occur in younger women and get worse with extended standing.

my big toe hurts at night. its so severe that i cant sleep. feels like the vein connected to the big toe & veins on top of foot hurt too. i dont have varicose veins. im not overweight. dont get these pains during daytime naps. not on feet in day?

: Gout??, Inflammatory arthritis (Rheumatoid, SLE)??, arterial insufficiency??,

If present for 3-4 days, see if it passes by itself. If present for 3-4 weeks, see a Podiatrist

saw the urologist finally. during exam he said i had a double varicocele which is causing the testicular atrophy. it could also be causing the low libido and ed. would surgical correction of the varicose veins in the testicle reverse the atrophy ?

: Bilateral varicoceles and testicular atrophy leading to low libido at your age is very rare. You need an ultrasound  and serum testosterone. Also suggest get a second opinion.

Congestion: Pelvic congestion can cause some increased swelling of your varicose veins, making them throb.  Elevating your legs, antiinflammatories, support stockings, and potentially surgery are all options to decrese discomfort.

Varicose vein : Venous stasis ulcers, venous stasis dermatitis, pitting edema to name a few of the long term sequelae.

Skin disoloration, and ulcers being the worst.

Several treatments: Varicose veins are due to leaking(refluxing) valves in the saphenous system and spider veins could be due to leaking valves or simply to aging, genetics or  pregnancies.  The treatment for each varies - laser closure and microphlebectomies for vv and sclerotherapy for spider veins.  You should see a vein specialist for a full venous evaluation with a venous reflux ultrasound.
