M.D. visit: You should be seen for this problem. The possible causes and conditions include bleeding from your mouth or nose, areas of bronchial irritation which do not appear abnormal on CT,  a bleeding/.clotting problem.  If you are exposed to smoke, I would urge you to avoid smoke. If your doctor can not see you in the office, I would advise checking with your Emergency Department.

Maybe: If the blood is gotten to the lab fairly quickly, it might reveal cancer cells.  But the absence of cancer cells doesn't mean you don't have cancer.  Spitting up blood, especially when it has been going on for a while, would be a reason to go through further tests to find out where it is coming from, and what is causing it.  A lab exam of bloody sputum is not the way to go.

TB? Cancer? Danger!: Coughing up blood from the chest is potentially very serious. The most common cause is tuberculosis (Koch's disease), especially in places like South Africa. Other infections and lung cancer also are possible. You need to see a doctor ASAP. You also need HIV testing, if not tested recently or otherwise not known to have it. Good luck.

Typically blood is associated with a tumor or infection. There are other causes as well including unusual conditions. None will be helped by continued smoking so help him/her stop. The only way your friend/you can know if there's a life-threatening problem is talk with doctor.

Nosebleeds : Are not uncommon with allergies. I would recommend saline rinses four times a day and start you allergy medicine, be it over the counter Cetirizine or prescription nose spray. Seek care if bleeds are lasting 30 minutes or more.

See your dr: Having a funny taste in your mouth, and spitting up blood is not normal. So it's best to go to your doctor, and let s/he look into this deeper, and see exactly what is going on. S/he will have to do a physical exam, and may need to refer you to an ENT doctor if warranted. Finding the source of the bleed is important! then, you'll know the cause.
