Don't panic: White coating of the tongue is  not a serious problem. Usually is reflection of other problems (like  use of antibiotics, digestive issues, bad oral hygiene) .Due to your recent surgery  once you start eating normal food and brushing better white coating will go away. If it persists longer then 2 weeks see you physician.

Tough it out (sorry!: I wish there was an easy way to recover from tonsilectomy  but generally the 1st week for adults is rough.  In general, stick to a diet thats easy to swallow (mashed potatoes, pasta, etc), drink lots of fluids because a lot of the pain comes from spasm after the surgery.Swallowing helps stretch out these muscles and you will feel better. Make sure you are getting enough electrolytes like potassium.

Thrush: This sounds like a common fungal infection of the tongue called candidiasis or thrush. Taking any antibiotics while you were hospitalized to prevent infection could have caused this to happen. It is not serious just rinse your mouth with mix of peroxide, salt, and listerine if it doesn't get better in a few days get a prescription from your doctor.

Talk 2 surgeon: Always talk to your surgeon about any complications & concerns that occur after your surgery/procedure.  In fact, during your pre-op consultation, you should ask possible & common complications & concerns and what to do.

No worry: It is not uncommon after a tonsillectomy, that children get a white coating on the tongue due to build up of dead cells on the surface from lack of friction from eating and mild dehydration.  Push fluids, and when your child is eating normally again, it should resolve.  Alternatively, anyone on antibiotics can develop a yeast infection or thrush which will usually clear when off antibiotics.

Possible thrush: I hope your son is feeling better after having his tonsils removed.  What you are describing could likely be thrush which is a yeast infection due to post surgery antibiotics. Your physician could prescribe nystatin, or You could try dabbing white distilled vinegar on it, or having him eat yogurt with active cultures. Some people also recommend probiotics to restore bacterial balance.

does recauterization surgery after tonsillectomy reset healing process? will tongue, etc, hurt again? swelling again? can one still expect to feel better 14 days after initial surgery (as opposed to 14 from recauterization)? more details welcome?

Much less traumatic: A tonsillectomy involves cutting out the tonsils. A recauterization is in effect a burning of the newly healing scar, usually because part of the tonsil is regrowing. The recauterization is much less traumatic to your throat, and should heal much more quickly. You should expect to feel much better within 48 hours depending on how extensive the cauterization is.

4yr old had tonsillectomy. has a grey/whitish coating on tongue.  also bad breath. is this normal?

Infection: Often when there is surgery in the mouth there is an odor associated with it. Just to be sure have your child checked for an infection.
